The automatic guidance computer (ALC) has been the heart of track measurement technology and track geometry control for tamping machines for 20 years. However, hardware and software of the system have been fundamentally revised to offer a modern experience.
The data recording processor (DRP) is used to record, evaluate and display various track parameters (e.g. longitudinal level, alignment, crosslevel, twist, etc.). The DRP is used after the work of the tamping machine or a dynamic track stabilizer.
The measuring devices for the various parameters deliver analog signals. These are read by the DRP system at regular intervals (e.g. every 25 cm), saved after an analog/digital conversion and displayed on the screen. If necessary, they can also be printed using an off-the-shelf printer.
The fully digitized processing of the measured values offers many new possibilities for evaluation. By comparing the measured values with specified rail-specific limit values for the individual parameters, tolerance violations are identified. A graphical display and a listing in the exceedance report are carried out automatically. The stored measurement data can be transferred to other computers and processed via USB.
The hardware essentially consists of the analog measuring devices for various track parameters, a 15 ”touch panel PC and a PLC for recording and digitizing the measuring signals.
The Tamping Assistant is an AI-based solution that analyzes scanned track data, detects obstacles, and supports the operator by automatically stopping the machine and positioning the working units. These tamping suggestions ensure reproducible work quality and recording the tamping process makes track maintenance transparent.
The Tamping Assistant scans the track, gives specific recommendations for action and checks the machine’s work units. This not only reduces the operator’s workload, but also lowers the risk of incorrect operation. If manual interaction is required, there is still a fallback option.
